What Is an Atomizer?

An atomizer is defined as any device that emits liquid as a fine spray like diffuser pumps on aerosol cans or perfume bottles. Today, atomizers are integral parts of the vaping world, allowing millions of users to inhale flavored nicotine vapor. In fact, with its implementation within vapes and e-cigarette devices, many use the term “vape coil” to describe an atomizer. However, this is not entirely accurate.

While vape coil is a widely accepted shorthand way of saying atomizer, “coil” only refers to the wrapped metal wire around the wicking material which is heated to produce vapor. Since vaping is the primary application of atomizers in the present, we will use them as an example for you to better understand them.

Fixed within the tank or clearomizer, an e-cigarette atomizer supplies power via a battery that fires up a red-hot filament called a coil. The heated coil then helps the nicotine-based liquid to evaporate upon contact. The e-liquid itself is contained within a wick that absorbs the e-liquid when submerged in the tank through wicking ports in the atomizer housing.

When the coil around the wick is heated, it forces the soaked e-liquid to evaporate, providing the user with the vapor they inhale. Generally, the atomizer will have a central tube, facilitating proper airflow to carry the vapor up and out of the mouthpiece. Now that we have outlined how an atomizer works, it is important to cover when an atomizer should be replaced.

The atomizer itself has a varied lifespan, with top-quality variations using “mesh-tech” designs that outperform their counterparts. Nonetheless, the service life of atomizers is usually determined by a range of factors, some of which include the type of e-liquid used, the power output of your device, and even correct storage. As such, when making a judgment about the condition of your atomizer, you must look at several factors.

There are various signs that you can look for when deciding if you need to replace your atomizer. First, perform a visual inspection to determine if the wicking material is dirty, black, or burnt looking. You can also check the e-liquid for its coloration, where a dark color indicates that it needs to be swapped out. If the e-liquid has yellow or brown “tracers” or particles seeping through the wicking ports, the material may be burnt internally.

Beyond visual indications, there are a number of other factors one should pay attention to. For instance, flavor is also a determining factor, as a weird or weak taste means that you need to change your atomizer. Next, a gurgling sound when you inhale suggests that the coil wick is experiencing coil flooding which is where e-liquid partially obstructs airflow. Lastly, if the device displays the term “shorted,” the coil may be failing or was installed incorrectly.
